Think about the many arts you’ve learned since you were born. Is there an art that keeps grabbing your attention, curiosity, and imagination? What is it about that art that makes you pursue it? What is an art worth pursuing? While every art is learnable, not every art is sustainable. This book is an attempt to understand the original meaning of art, to free it from its association with visual expression alone, and to inspire you to find and cultivate an art that enriches you and the world.

The Museum Guard Paulo Machado Books

In this slim volume, the character of the wise museum guard explains his expansive view of art and life to a young art school student. The old man quotes broadly from the wisdom of the ages to explain his philosophy. Reading their conversation made me question a lot of my own assumptions and think about a more profound function for art, beyond technique and aesthetics. The book's message might provide a healthy challenge to people in the art world, and it would appeal to all those interested in the big questions facing our world today.

The Museum Guard Paulo Machado Books Reviews

An accessible and thought-provoking read about art, broadly defined. Through a series of conversations between an art enthusiast and an old museum guard, you'll be invited to look at art in a new way and to explore the idea that great art is sustainable and grounded deeply in the world around us.
This book is about art. I know nothing about art. I have only been trained in technical fields my whole life. I never understood what fine arts meant or what a liberal arts education is. After reading The Museum Guard, I think maybe now I am not that much more ignorant when it comes to understanding "great works of art" than many highly trained "artists."

The author creates a captivating conversation that introduces, teaches, and provokes. Putting the book down only made me think about it more. It has changed the way I think about all meaningful works, and about the meaning of my personal works in everyday life. I would encourage everyone in a technical field, students or practitioners, to read this book and think about how interpreting work as real art could help them produce truly great works in their field.
What is the good of art? This is the essential question in a wide-ranging and deep-dive exploration into the meaning and purpose of art as education into the values that underlie all human relationships and understandings through a series of conversations between an art gallery visitor and a museum guard who we soon realize is looking after more than the art works in the art gallery. Along the way, we encounter Aristotle, John Dewey, Joseph Campbell, Arthur Danto, and a host of other viewpoints that provide us with knowledge and understanding into art’s ability to relate us to the world in a manner that follows a deepening state of knowledge of the curious art-goer at each data point in time of the conversation. The museum guard engages both the art-goer and us, the reader in practical and big questions that end up grounding us in a love of beauty and of our planet earth. I love it, and will return to it again, and again.
